Life and career
Joe Louis Dudley Sr. was born in Aurora, North Carolina, the fifth of 11 children.[1] When he was in the first grade, he was mistakenly labeled as being mentally retarded because of a speech impediment. In 1962, Mr. Dudley graduated from A&T with a bachelor’s, and he moved to New York to become a full-time employee of Fuller Products. Mr. Dudley stirred the formulas in steel drums with a spatula the size of a canoe paddle. Ms. Dudley typed the labels, and their children screwed on the jar tops after the products had cooled and set overnight. “I want to be remembered as someone who helped people, made people smile, really had a heart for helping people…especially in the Black community,” she said.

Joe Louis Dudley, who rose from humble beginnings and overcame a speech impediment to create a multimillion-dollar, Black-owned hair care company, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2024, at age 86. Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 19, at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Greensboro, N.C. By 1975, he had started Dudley Products Company and employed approximately 400 salespeople. His initial success also enabled him to start a beauty school, and a chain of beauty supply stores throughout the Southeastern United States. And after a stint in Chicago, where the Dudleys took over the Fuller business, which was floundering, they returned to North Carolina and built their first plant, in Greensboro, adding Fuller products to their own line.

Inspired by successful entrepreneur Samuel B. Fuller (1905–1988), Dudley began selling Fuller Products door to door while he was still in college. He ultimately opened a Fuller distributorship alongside his wife, Eunice, who had also been in Fuller sales when they met. In 1967, the couple took a leap and founded their own company, Dudley Products, Inc., in Greensboro, North Carolina. Among their popular early products were Dudley’s Q+ Pink Deodorant Soap and Dudley’s Cocoa Butter Soap. Libby Labs has long been a recognized custom formulator for over 60 years.
